Gökhan Saki will make his UFC debut against Henrique da Silva at UFC Fight Night in Japan on September 23, 2017 at the Saitama Super Arena in Japan. The event will be headlined by UFC light-heavyweights, Ovince St. Preux vs. Mauricio Rua.
Rumours had been rife that Saki would be making his UFC debut at UFC Rotterdam on September 2; and that the former GLORY light-heavyweight champion’s strong fan base in Europe was one of the key factors for the UFC signing him up.
However, something that some MMA fans might be as aware about are the strong kickboxing roots of Japan which, was the home of kickboxing, during the ‘Golden era’ of the sport. At the time, the biggest kickboxing promotion was K-1 for whom, Saki established himself as one of the most exciting and best technical kickboxers for a generation, becoming one of the most popular kickboxers ever in the sport.
Saki is still a huge fans favourite throughout the world from his glorious kickboxing career and had confirmed confirmed in recent months that he had signed for the UFC after his former coach and GLORY Sports Director, Cor Hemmers, had exclusively broke the news to K1ANOOP at GLORY 41 Den Bosch that Saki had left GLORY Kickboxing to pursue a career in MMA.
